A History of Cleveland’s West Side Market: Over 100 Years of Community and Culture

Cleveland’s West Side Market is a historic indoor/outdoor market located in the Ohio City neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio. The market has been around for over 100 years, serving as a community hub and a destination for fresh produce, meats, cheeses, and other products.

The West Side Market was founded in 1840, making it one of the oldest continuously operating public markets in the United States. It was originally located in a wooden building on the west side of the Cuyahoga River, hence its name. The market was a popular destination for farmers and merchants to sell their wares, and it quickly became a vital part of the community.

In 1912, the West Side Market moved to its current location, a beautiful brick building with a distinctive clock tower. The building was designed by architects Hubbell & Benes and was built at a cost of $635,000. The new location allowed for the expansion of the market, with more stalls and shops added to accommodate the growing number of vendors and customers.

The West Side Market has undergone several renovations and expansions over the years, including the addition of new wings and the restoration of the clock tower. Today, the market comprises over 100 stalls and shops offering a wide variety of products, including fresh produce, meats, cheeses, bakery goods, and more.

In addition to the stalls selling fresh produce and other goods, the West Side Market also has a number of food stalls offering everything from pierogies and Polish sausage to BBQ and falafel. It’s a great place to grab a quick bite to eat or sit down for a more leisurely meal. The market is open Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The West Side Market is more than just a place to shop for groceries. It’s a community hub and a cultural destination, attracting visitors from all over the region. It’s a popular spot
